What Are Hot and Cold Numbers?
In Korean Lotto 6/45, these are among the most widely used concepts in lottery analysis:
- Hot Numbers: Numbers that have been frequently drawn in recent draws.
- Cold Numbers: Numbers that have not been drawn for a long period.
Two Perspectives
"Follow the Hot Numbers"
"Numbers that appear frequently in recent draws are likely to continue appearing."
This view is based on Trend Following. Some argue that physical characteristics of lottery balls (weight, coating) could create subtle biases.
"Cold Numbers Are Due"
"Numbers that haven't appeared for a long time are due to come out soon."
This is known as the Gambler's Fallacy – a flawed reasoning. Each draw is an independent event, so previous results do not influence the next draw.
Data Verification
Using BALLPICK's database for verification:
Hot Number Strategy (Based on Last 20 Draws)
- Track the 5 most frequently drawn numbers in the last 20 draws
- Probability of those numbers appearing in the next draw: ~48% (average 2.4 out of 6)
- Expected value (random baseline): ~44% (2.0 out of 6)
Cold Number Strategy (Not Drawn for 50+ Rounds)
- Track numbers that haven't appeared for 50+ draws
- Probability of appearing in the next draw: ~13% per number
- Expected value (random baseline): ~13%
